Highland Drove, the 2ft 5in by
4ft 1in (74cm x 1.24m) canvas, right, offered in Bristol, was signed and dated 1902, and came from the
private effects of a Weston-Super-Mare hotelier.

Specialist-in-charge David Rees said the picture was in “immaculate and original” condition, adding: “As far as I’m aware the canvas had always been under glass which would explain the wonderful condition.” The Highland subject matter attracted a smattering of Scottish dealers but, against a £4500-6000 estimate, the picture was taken up by the West Country trade at £10,400 hammer.
