Taking place between 1pm-7pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October, the show offers watercolours such as Dudley Hardy’s large quayside seascape (£3995) and Henry Warren’s composition of a sleeping girl beside a spinning wheel (£975), while oils include the large panel, Mother and Daughter (£14,740) by Charles Baxter and The Helpful Daughter (3750), by the Irish-American genre painter, Hugh Newell (born 1830). Other shows that end their run this Saturday (October 13) follow.

It is abstract art which is attracting punters to the Artbank Gallery (114 Clerkenwell Road, EC1M 5SA. Tel: 020 7608 3333). Among the paintings are Evolution (£2600) by Julia Macmillan (born 1962) and Gold 16 (£2400) by Gabriele Cappelli (born 1972), while a selection of screen prints include examples by Neil Canning (born 1960), Anthony Frost (born 1951) and John Hoyland (born 1934).

Following last month’s highly successful solo show by Suffolk painter Margaret Thomas (born 1916), Messum’s Contemporary (8 Cork Street, W1S 3LJ. Tel: 020 7437 5545) continue the East coast theme with Painters and Sculptors of East Anglia.

Among the nearly 100 works (£200-22,500) by 18 artists are the distinctive carved and painted bird sculptures (£3850-22,500) of Guy Taplin (born 1939), two oils (£7850 and £14,850) and a watercolour (£1650) painted by Mary Fedden, RA (born 1915), following a recent stay on the Suffolk coast, and the florid polymer paintings (£2250-4500) of Brian Lewis (born 1947), which depict with wry humour people at play on beaches and in boats. Judging by the sheer volume of guests who attended the preview on September 26, this latest Messum show looks set to be yet another winner.

Born in Middlesex in 1922, Miles Peter Richmond has had a fascinating painting career, including being assistant to David Bomberg at his painting school in Ronda in Spain.

Now based in Middlesbrough, Richmond’s paintings have a hanging at Bartley Drey Gallery (62 Old Church Street, SW3 6DP. Tel: 020 7352 8686).
