The serene figure of a lady with her head turned elegantly to one side and wearing a bronze laurel wreath, was set on a green marble plinth bearing a brass inscription plaque and signed Prof. Garella W.R.
The 13in (33cm) high piece attracted a great deal of interest from bidders who took it way above the £1200-1500 estimate before it sold to a dealer at £4100.
A local Sussex dealer was successful in taking home an unusual pair of German
polychrome painted spelter figures of Columbine and Harlequin. Made in the second half of the 19th century, the figures, both signed Waagen to the square base and one entitled La Charité were each holding a relief cast dish.
The figures were rather large, the tallest at 3ft 5in (1.04m) high. They sold at £3600.
