Prepared for a 1970 issue of Adventure Comic, the ink on paper artwork was signed with the illustrator’s initials.

As in their previous sale, CBPA saw high prices for early issues of Dandy (one example pictured) and this time they took a bid of £990 for a double-page artwork by Dudley Watkins for an ‘Our Gang’ story that appeared in Dandy No. 67 of 1939. A second Watkins artwork, a ‘Smarty Grandpa’ story from a 1939 issue of Dandy, together with a copy of the comic itself, reached £424.

One item that seemed a little out of place here was the first issue of The Listener, published in 1929 – but it sold at £130.

Generally regarded as the first UK Superman reprints are those that appeared in issues 771-792 of Triumph in 1939. To the 22 issues as originally catalogued were added issues 807-814 that contained a second run of Superman stories, and, by the by, were the last ever issues of the comic itself. The
staples had left rust marks, but the pages were clean and white and the covers bright, and the lot sold at £1573. Four of the Triumph Superman issues had special promotional covers designed by John McCail.
