Stamped Germany, it was among the contents from a local deceased estate in Essex and was thought to have been in the family since its manufacture in the 1920s. Bar a few minor scratches to the case and a slightly squashed base this was a “rare thing” in reasonable condition and bidders responded – a specialist dealer beating off rivals, many via the Internet, with a winning bid of, £5400.

Mickey Mouse fans from New York to Tokyo joined the bidding for this tinplate money box, right, offered in the October 16 sale at the Leigh-on-Sea rooms of John Stacey (15% buyer’s premium).
