The attraction of such pieces extends to their successors – the furniture made by Heals during the 1930s like the oak refectory-style dining table and four chairs shown above, which were snapped up by the same buyer at £600. Other Heals furniture included a set of bookshelves that went to a private bidder at £270.
The Surrey sale was led by a 19th century example of Dutch marquetry inlaid furniture, a traditional favourite but in the rather unusual form of a settee. It was bought by a local dealer at £2300 who also secured the matching tea table at £1500 and pair of side chairs at £750 – in all cases easily clearing the estimates.

UK: THE market for Arts & Crafts furniture remains a buoyant one as was evident at the February 28 sale held by Dorking-based Crow’s Auction Gallery (10 per cent buyer’s premium), when a period 5ft 10in wide by 6ft high (1.78 x 1.83m) oak dresser with open arched back panel and central bubble glazed door led the way at £1300.
