Mainly American, but also English decorators just can’t get enough of this distinctive concrete work mostly fashioned in Provence in the 1920s and now attractively bleached and weathered by more than 70 years in the open air.
Mr Swaffer has found this new line much more in demand than period terracotta, and in the walled garden behind his shop at 30 High Street you will find benches shaped like trees, armchairs like vines and planters like logs.
“It’s even been given a name by our clients, who call it faux bois,” says Spencer.
This concrete garden furniture is also being reproduced but the colour is nowhere near as fetching as the Provence original.

Concrete garden furniture is the hottest new thing on the market, says Arundel, West Sussex dealer Spencer Swaffer who is finding benches, chairs, jardinières and planters flying out of his shop almost as soon as they arrive.
