The commode, which was described as “possibly attributable to William Hallett” the 18th century cabinetmaker, compares closely to one made for the 4th Earl of Shaftesbury for St Giles House, Dorset. It had passed down by direct descent through the Earle family since the 19th century and was in original, unrestored condition.
