With brass inlaid tops, rope twist mid rails and stuff-over seats on turned legs, the set was taken up at £8200.

A rosewood chiffonier with moulded roundels brought another good price at £2500.

And as ever, Georgian mahogany furniture made its mark. Several buyers interested in a George II mahogany kettle stand with tripod base ensured bidding went to £4200 shortly after a George III mahogany tallboy sold at £3200.

A furry Steiff polar bear on wheels also made a flurry. The golden mohair bear with black boot button eyes, black stitched nose and the trademark Steiff button in the ear, 17in (43cm), made £1350.
