Among the Vanity Fair prints, there was no doubt at all about the Man of the Match – the former Kent captain E.W. Dillon, as portrayed in The Champion County, an Owl cartoon of 1913. It made £2000.
Among the books, a set of six Surtees titles, all ‘Jorrocks’ editions issued by Bayntuns of Bath in 1926, some unopened and uniformly bound in pictorial blue cloth, made £440, while Snaffles successes included A Half Century of Memories of 1951 at £280, ’Osses and Obstacles of 1935 at £220, and More Bandobast of 1936, at £200. All were first editions in dust jackets. A copy of the 1989 Lambourn Press book, Snaffles on Hunting, by Welcome & Collens, also sold at £230.
A 1903 first edition of E.Œ. Somerville’s Slipper’s ABC of Hunting, which contains 20 full page coloured illustrations so beloved by country pubs, reached £300.
Thirty-one volumes from
the Badminton Library series brought a bid of £700.
