Sold at £215 was a copy of The Shepherd’s Guide... in Lancashire, Cumberland and Westmorland by William Hodgson. Published in Ulverston in 1849, and recently rebound in black calf with a maroon label, Hodgson’s book contains numerous engraved plates of sheep and their marks.
Other items of particular local interest included a 1786 first of William Gilpin’s Observations Relative Chiefly to... the Mountains and Lakes of Cumberland and Westmorland, illustrated with folding lake plans, oval aquatints, etc. and again rebound in half calf, which sold for £240 and James Clarke’s Survey of the Lakes of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, a folio production 1787, which contains 11 folding engraved plans and maps.
The latter failed to reach the reserve in the room but was subsequently moved on at £600.

Creases and stains are no bar to Bounty book hunters
UK: ONE CHART was very creased and there was a stain on the frontispiece that penetrated to the title page and early leaves, but the copy of Bligh’s Narrative of the Mutiny on [the...] Bounty offered in Carlisle was a tightly bound copy of the 1790 first edition in a contemporary binding of quarter calf and marbled boards, and it sold at £3150.
