A Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) cast and patinated 15in (38cm) bronze group of an Indian elephant under attack by two tigers, complete with impressed seal signature was secured at £1200 by a local dealer for his own collection. A couple of lots earlier was an early 20th century Asian gilt bronze Buddha, 7in (18cm) high. With downcast eyes, the smiling Buddha was seated in bhumisparsmudra – representing the moment of enlightenment – and caused a stir in the room before selling at £1200.
A third Asian entry was an early 20th century polychrome decorated porcelain table lamp in the form of a seated kimono-clad lady. The 2ft (61cm) high lamp with brass fittings took £670 from a local dealer.
Among the furniture, a 7ft 2in (2.18m) George III mahogany longcase clock was the best seller. Signed to the white painted dial Matt Wells, the clock had a swan neck pediment over an arched glazed door flanked by turned, tapered and fluted pillars on a box plinth. With an eight- day bell strike movement it brought £1800.

A clutch of Oriental entries were among the more interesting works in the Amersham Auction Rooms’ otherwise run-of-the-mill offering of 324 antiques and collectables on 2 August.
