Other furniture included a set of eight Victorian mahogany crown back dining chairs which took £800 and a Victorian half tester bed which brought £680.
Ceramics also sold well with a pair of 18th century tea bowls and saucers decorated with Lang Lizen figures topping the section when they sold in the room against strong competition on the phone at £480.
The usual popularity of Imari pattern porcelain helped a complete c.1895 cabaret set offered here go to a phone bidder at £580.
In the scientific instruments, a 19th century cased barometer in full working order went to the book at £300, and a 19th century mahogany physician’s travelling case including all its original contents took £240.
Later on in the month the Burton auctioneers’ 813-lot sale of 20th century furniture and ceramics again had the attraction of all pieces being fresh to the market, which appealed to private collectors and the specialist trade.
Royal Doulton character jugs have a large collecting base and a variety of examples offered here were strongly contested. A Smuts jug no. D6198 was the top seller going to a buyer in the room at £780 and a Punch and Judy man jug no. D6590 brought £250.
The ever popular Clarice Cliff found favour at Burton. A Crocus pattern bowl took £130 and a Cottage bookend sold in the room at £480.

£3000 ‘fresh’ sofa table tops day in Staffordshire
Good stock furniture attracted bidders to the first of these Staffordshire August sales on 15 August at Richard Wintertons, the best being a George III mahogany sofa table.
