Summers Place, formerly known as Sotheby’s Sussex, will now be called Sotheby’s South and becomes the venue for high-profile quarterly ‘International’ sales which will bring together in a deluxe catalogue the best the rooms have to offer across a number of disciplines.
Most of the Billingshurst themed sales, for which they are well-known within the antiques trade, will survive intact (the Continental sales being the only notable casualty) and buyers can expect a number of new category sales to be introduced.
The initiative – fronted by recently-appointed chairman and TV personality Tim Wonnacott – reflects a belief within the company that Summers Place currently lacks the image of a business which last year turned over close to £20 million.

...and open in Zurich
Sotheby's are celebrating the launch of their new Zurich salerooms with a prestigious exhibition of Impressionist and Modern paintings from the Whitney Collection on April 14 and 15, 1999.
The new saleroom, at Gessnerallee 1, alongside the River Sihl, in what was formerly the Ober department store, will serve other European countries as well and opens as the auction house celebrates 30 years in Switzerland.
The Whitney paintings – to be included in New York’s spring sales – going on show include Cezanne’s Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier (est. $25-35m) and Seurat’s L’île de la Grande Jatte (est. $25-35m).
