UK: ORIGINALLY retailed by manufacturers Holtzapffel on August 27, 1846 at £137.16s and last sold at Phillips Chester in 1988 for just over £6000, this gentleman’s ornamental screw mandrel lathe from the collection of Sir Francis Whichcote, complete with two brass bound mahogany triptychs containing 98 rosewood handled turning tools, was consigned to Tool Shop Auction’s sale in Needham Market, Suffolk, on July 31, where it sold to a UK collector at £12,250 (plus 10 per cent premium).
