Top trunks for a classy look

Remember that trunks that were used for travel decades ago will come with the knocks and scratches typical of having been lugged around. This helps to confirm their age and gives the pieces their character, as do the luggage labels that some come with.

This early 20th century Louis Vuitton travel trunk has a brass plaque inscribed 'Linen & Blankets' and has an estimate of £800-£1200 at McTear's in Glasgow on January 15.

The Aynhoe Park auction at Dreweatts on January 20-21 is selling a wide variety of items from a country home, including quite a number of interesting trunks.
This early 20th century French canvas and wooden bound trunk by Bigot is 64cm high, 117cm wide and 57cm deep.
It has an estimate of £300-£500 in the Dreweatts auction.
This French canvas and wooden bound trunk measures 67cm high, 91cm wide, 58cm deep and has a label that reads: 'Articles de Voyage, M. Antheaume, 25 & 31 Faubourg Poissonnière, Paris.'
It is estimated at £300 to £500 in the Dreweatts sale.
