This Dutch School scene of fishing boats was among the top lots at a recent Gorringe’s sale.

The first was a Dutch school scene of fishing boats along the coast (above). It was offered in a weekly sale at Gorringe’s of East Sussex on March 28 and was lot 614 among a jumble of furniture, fine art jewellery and much more. Nevertheless, it stood out.  Despite having no name attached to it, the 19th century scene was knocked down for £2000 over an estimate of £50-80. It was painted on wooden panel and measured 16 x 23cm.

In Woking, Ewbank’s sold a portrait of the Countess of Rothes. It was catalogued as being in the manner of L Schunemann (act.1651-81), whose original portrait of Anne Lindsay, 1st Duchess of Rothes was destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1991. It was one of four pictures of members of Clan Leslie lost in the blaze. The oil and canvas was offered framed and relined with an estimate of £200-300 in the Silver & Fine Art sale of March 24. It attracted good attention driving the hammer price up to £5500.
