Bought on Bargain Hunt, sold on thesaleroom.com
21 June 2021 Bidders on thesaleroom.com regularly snap up the items that appear on the BBC's 'Bargain Hunt' TV show.Bargain Hunt is a fun show, as presenter Charlie Ross demonstrates (image via BBC iPlayer).
When you watch an episode of this daytime classic and the auctioneer says they are taking "bids from the internet", that's what they are typically referring to.
Alongside the usual repeats, there have been a few new episodes recently. These were shot during the times when lockdown rules were in place but not quite as strict as they were at other times, illustrated by the socially distanced line-ups of contestants and the fact that they did not attend the auction in person.
Here are some of items that appeared on those new episodes broadcast in May 2021 and that were bought by people like you – users of thesaleroom.com.
Let's go Bargain Hunting!
This 18th century Derby tea bowl caught bidders' attention. It sold for £40 on October 28, giving the Bargain Hunt contestants a handy £20 profit.
This furniture was a bonus buy by expert Nick Hall (himself an auctioneer at Bentley's). The table and chairs have a look that is currently very popular and at £110 Nick was understandably expecting them to do well. However, a set would usually have four chairs and so bidding reached £70 but went no further.
They still look pretty cool to us.
These maritime lamps were bought at Newark for £225 and were sold for £190 at Bamfords to a UK buyer on thesaleroom.com who outbid a rival from New Zealand.
This Royal Navy Sweetheart brooch was bought for £10 at Ardingly and sold for £42 at Nesbits on December 16.
We've said it before and we'll say it again: auctions are a great place to pick up low-cost second-hand furniture.
This George III drop-leaf table has plenty of history to it, dating from about 1820, and it will see plenty more days ahead because antique furniture will last and last (which means it's great for the environment).
The Bargain Hunt contestants paid £45 for it at a fair in Newark but because there is so much good furniture available it tends to sell for low prices at auction. Here an online bidder got it for just £40.
And here is what that same table looks like with the leaves extended. That shows how antique furniture can be so practical: you can put it to one side when you don't want it to take up too much space and then you extend it only when you need to.
This Cambodian silver box brought an exotic touch to the show and a profit of £10 for the contestants who had bought it for £65.
This Sterling silver brooch in the form of a German Shepherd Dog with a cabouchon ruby eye is 4cm long and sold for £20 to a buyer on thesaleroom.com at a sale held by Wessex Auction Rooms.
This boxed set of coffee bean spoons, dating probably from the 1930s or 1940s, was bought in Leominster for a mere £8, which meant the contestants were almost certain to make a profit. A bidder on thesaleroom.com got them for just £20 at the same sale held by Wessex Auction Rooms.
