The archive is being offered via direct descent from the family. Born in the US, Cody came to Europe in 1890 and was the first man to fly an aeroplane built in Britain. He is best known for his work on the large kites known as Cody War-Kites that the British Army used before the First World War.

The lots carry estimates from £300 but the top lot in the sale is the Mappin & Webb silver Shell Motor Spirit Trophy (1912), shown above, which is estimated at £30,000-50,000.

Photographs of Cody flying his aircraft also feature, including on his first flight on January 2, 1908. This group is estimated at £300-500 in Devizes, Wiltshire.
