A student of Jules-Clement Levasseur, he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1874 and was a member of Les Artistes Français, earning a number of distinctions including the Legion of Honour.
This typical work titled Going to School was consigned to Golding Young & Mawer’s (20% buyer’s premium) February 26 sale in Lincolnshire along with the original Christie, Manson and Woods catalogue from 1925 it had appeared in.
The 18 x 10in (45 x 26cm) oil on canvas tipped over top estimate to sell for £5500.
