Key to the appeal of this William III miniature coffee pot by the Carey Lane smallworker Edward Hunsdon (London 1699) was its distinctive conical cover.
The two known full-sized vessels of this shape, hallmarked 1670 and 1681, are the earliest surviving English coffee or teapots.
This one, measuring just 2½in (6cm) high, had been acquired from Shrubsole in 1986. It took $4800 (£3700).
