Each Cohray item was made to a commission and output was limited.
A mid-20th century Cohray steel, aluminum and glass desk was among the 230 lots from the estate of Sir David Tang (1954-2017), the multi-millionaire Hong Kong entrepreneur and philanthropist, offered at Bellmans (22% buyer’s premium) at Billingshurst on May 13.
The 7ft 7in (2.32m) wide bowfront desk lacked its original glass inserts and was estimated at £200-400 but sold at £6200.
Generally comprising minor items and attracting 20% import VAT on the hammer price, the Tang estate nevertheless enjoyed a 98% selling rate and a hammer total of just over £200,000.
