This carved giltwood casket is richly decorated with a complex series of grotesque sea creatures, shells and star motifs.
Made in Sicily c.1725, it reflects a growing fashion for grottos (particularly for young men who encountered Italian examples on their Grand Tour). There is also a clear interest in nautical mythology.
Measuring 20½in (52cm) wide, it has been repapered inside with vibrant patterns.
The casket is on offer for £8500 at Anthony Outred Antiques, the Pimlico Road dealership which offers furniture, sculpture and works of art. The website features a range of stock including lighting and mirrors, Asian works of art and antique door furniture (a focus of the gallery).
Outred is on the BADA council and is a member of CINOA.
