Up until the early 2000s, they expanded the collection, acquiring pieces from antique fairs, auctions and ceramic dealers in London and the regions. Now the assemblage has been consigned by their family to Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood’s sale in Exeter on January 22.

The 125-lot auction features ceramics by the major English porcelain producers; Bow, Chelsea, Lowestoft, Vauxhall and Worcester. It is noted in the catalogue that the couple “knew what they liked and were keen to acquire pieces in perfect or as near perfect condition as possible…”.

Among the stars is this matched pair of Chelsea bonbonnieres above, modelled as a lady and a gentleman’s head, c.1760, which are estimated at £3000-5000. The 3in (7.5cm) long confectionery jars appear in literature on English porcelain and bear paper labels for the London gallery Stoner & Evans, and Chelsea exhibitions held in 1924 and 1948.

Also featuring is a George III Lowestoft ‘Royal’ Commemorative mug, c.1790-95, estimated at £3000-5000.
