The first catalogue, a New York sale of contemporary art titled New Now, will be available for viewing on September 17.

"This is a significant initiative that allows our clients to easily access our sales and bid in real time on collectable art and design on a platform that spans the globe," said Phillips' CEO Edward Dolman.

Phillips join Sotheby's (who launched in April) on the platform alongside clients of Invaluable, the US-based provider of online live auctions.

Auctioneers pay eBay a commission on each sale that takes place on the site.

In August, after five months and 113 sales on eBay, Sotheby's said the partnership has seen the number of online bidders increase nearly 55%, leading to a 35% increase in the value of successful bids.
