This may look like your average 19th century vodka glass, but this tumbler descended through the family of a high-ranking Russian noble.
The Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovic was
banished to England by his first cousin Tsar Nicholas II for his
morganatic marriage to Countess Sophie de Merenberg.
The 3½in (8.5cm) high glass forms part of a
22-lot collection of Russian Imperial glassware from three banquet
services belonging to the Grand Duke consigned to Lyon
& Turnbull's sale on March 26 in Edinburgh. Estimates
range from £200-£1500.
