Maintenance work was being carried out at Tynecastle Stadium, home of the Edinburgh club also known as Hearts, when a display cabinet was forced open probably between 8am and 4.30pm on Wednesday, August 7, and the alarm was then raised by a glass cleaner who noticed the items were missing.
Following inquiries, it is understood workers at the stadium noticed a suspicious looking man on the Wednesday, around the time when the items are believed to be have been taken. He is described as white, aged 40-45, 5ft 9in tall, medium build, short ginger hair, clean-shaven, wearing a dark bomber jacket and dark trousers.
The four missing items are: an 18ct gold pocket watch; Scottish Football League Championship Winner's medal 1896-97, won by James Mirk; a winner's medal 1894-95 won by George Scott; a Victory Cup Final runners-up medal from 1919, awarded to Bob Mercer; and a Victory medal awarded posthumously to Harry Wattie who was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
A club spokesman said many of them were family heirlooms that had been donated.
