PORTRAIT dealer Philip Mould has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours.
Mr Mould, who owns Historical Portraits in Dover Street, is
acknowledged as one of the foremost authorities on British
portraiture.
His unique discoveries and rediscoveries include the Verrio
portrait of Charles II, found in Vienna and now in the Queen's
collection, and last year's rediscovery of a portrait of Henry
VIII, which is now housed at Hever Castle.
He is an expert valuer for the Heritage Lottery Fund and the
Government's Acceptance in Lieu scheme and since 1998 has been
official art adviser to the House of Commons and to the House of
Lords. He is also a member of the Development Board of the National
Portrait Gallery. Over the years he has helped Parliament acquire
more than 100 works and he has also helped UK museums acquire more
than 200 works over the past 20 years.
A delighted Mr Mould told the Antiques Trade Gazette: "It's nice
to have a positive light shone on the trade."
