Located on two floors of the museum, the galleries will display furniture, textiles, dress, ceramics, glass, jewellery, silver, prints, paintings and sculpture, combining modern displays, accurately furnished period rooms and the latest technology.
Major names represented in the galleries include Grinling Gibbons, Robert Adam, William Morris and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with workshops and factories equally well depicted: the Mortlake tapestry works, Spitalfields silks, Wedgwood, Doulton and Liberty’s.
National treasures will include Henry VIII’s writing desk, James II’s wedding suit and the Great Bed of Ware.
