The talks, which follow a similar programme last Autumn, started in mid-May and continue until the end of July.

“If you have ever wanted to attend an auction, but have been put off by lack of knowledge, or been worried about how to bid, then the free Saleroom Talks... will be a must,” say the auctioneers, based at Donnington Priory near Newbury in Berkshire.

Still to go in the series are Introduction to Auctions, on Monday June 18, which will provide a newcomer’s guide to buying and selling. The talk starts at 6pm followed by a viewing of the forthcoming general sale at 7pm.

Then on Monday, July 2, Elaine Binning and John Leatt will look at furniture and Jonathan Pratt will discuss the pointers to value and the origin of some of the rugs on display in a talk entitled Antique Furniture, Garden Ornaments, Rugs and Textiles.

Monday, July 16 sees Richard Slater and Jonathan Pratt discussing how to care for jewellery and they will look at some sale highlights in Silver and Jewellery, Coins and Medals.

The series rounds off with a repeat of the Introduction to Auctions talk on Monday, July 30.
“Auctions can be enormous fun, as well as serious business, but we know there are people out there who would like to attend but are nervous of doing so,” said Elaine Binning.

“Our catalogues provide detailed descriptions but the hands-on approach that we are offering and the background information we are able to impart can really help to bring items to life. There is nothing like seeing and handling the objects to help you learn about them.”
