Signed and measuring 3ft 11/2in by 2ft 8in (96 x 81.5cm), it was described by Bearne’s chairman and picture specialist Robin Barlow as “a lovely picture in super condition; it came from a private collection, it hadn’t been lined – everything about it is lovely”. Competition came from three seriously interested parties, two on the telephone, but the painting eventually went to a member of the London trade bidding in the room.
