Large giltwood mirror attributed to Thomas Johnson, £34,000 at Cheffins.
The impressive carved giltwood mirror measured 6ft x 3ft 1in (1.83m x 94cm) and dated to c.1760.
It was a typical elaborate rococo design of the period attributed to the master carver Thomas Johnson whose work is known through his published collections of engravings such as Twelve Girandoles of 1755, One Hundred and Fifty new Designs of 1761 and The Book of the Carver of 1758.
This mirror featured elements that can be found in Johnson’s drawings such as the hunting dogs and the figure of an owl on the cresting.
Cheffins’ mirror had an early 20th century provenance to the Collection of Irwin Untermeyer, an American lawyer, judge and art collector, and is illustrated in Yvonne Hackenbroch’s English furniture with some Furniture of Other Countries in the Irwin Untermeyer Collection of 1958.
It sold at £34,000 (estimate £35,000-45,000) at the auction on March 20-21.
