Peter Harrison Fine Art offers this portrait of Lady Catherine Edwin (neé Montagu), c.1697, by Michael Dahl (1659-1743) for £18,000.

Lady Catherine (1673-1732) was one of 10 children and married Welsh MP Samuel Edwin. Their daughter Anne inherited the estate and the picture became part of the large collection belonging to her husband, the politician Thomas Wyndham of Clearwell before going to Adare Manor in Co Limerick as part of their grand-daughter’s inheritance.

One of the attractions of the picture is its full provenance which can be traced through the family to a sale at Christie’s in 1982.

When he painted this portrait, Dahl was in the midst of his most important commission, the Petworth Beauty series commissioned by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset and still on display at Petworth House.

The picture here bears distinct similarities to the portrait of Rachel Russell, Duchess of Devonshire, in clothing and hairstyle, suggesting both were completed around the same time.
