Purchased by the vendor from decorative arts dealers Ray and Lee Grover, its good condition, coupled with a strong colour and quality of the glass, ensured that it was taken to $92,500 (£67,520) by a private buyer.
There were a number of casualties elsewhere in the sale with silver not performing strongly. The cover piece – a Jean Royere straw marquetry carved ivory and gilt bronze cabinet, c.1953 – bucked the trend for 1940s/50s French furniture recently seen in the Paris salerooms. Estimated at $140,000-160,000, the strength of the US dollar against the French franc saw no takers for this entry. The sale totalled $3,470,370 (£2,533,115) inc. premium.
