Models, Toys, Dolls & Games
Collecting toys will undoubtedly evoke nostalgic memories of a long-gone childhood – from die-cast models (including Dinky Toys and Corgi), model railways, toy soldiers, dolls, teddies, games and general juvenilia, such as Meccano and LEGO, there is wealth of choice in this collecting area.
Fair trade steams on with stalls set up in saleroom
28 February 2003THESE specialist toy and train auctioneers, Barry Potter, must be one of the only, if not the only, ones to set up mini-fairs by allowing dealers to sell from stands at the back of the saleroom.
Squadron leads rail day at £45,800
14 January 2003“Stunning” was how auctioneer Ian Wright of Sheffield Railwayana Auctions (no buyer’s premium) described his December 7 sale. Taking £555,703 over the 550-lots, of which only six were left unsold, the sale showed how this buoyant market just keeps getting stronger and stronger.
Do not lose your marbles…
13 December 2002ONE of the most bizarre and unexpected results at Tennants’ sale in North Yorkshire on 21-22 December involved a collection of more than 200 19th century marbles, a selection of which are shown right.
Coming up in Rugby...
11 October 2002“A fine and rare Märklin gauge III spirit fired live steam locomotive with tender and two hand-painted coaches... presented to the Tsar Nicholas II on the occasion of the Russian royal family’s state visit to Paris in 1905...complete with unpublished photograph of the Tsar and Tsarevich in the hotel”.
Mickey, Muffin and all Net collectors’ interest
23 September 2002The bane of the shop trade and the boon of auctioneers – the Internet has certainly transformed the marketplace and nowhere is this more true than toy sales.
Why brown is ten times better than blue
03 September 2002THE highlight of the wide-ranging 1400-lot collectors’ sale held by Greenslade Taylor Hunt (15% buyer’s premium) at Taunton on July 20, was a Morris Minor 1000, from the Matchbox series, crucially painted in pale brown.
Barbies in aspic…

Kennerley’s Dinky vans deliver the specialist goods
28 May 2002A former chief executive of Vernon’s Pools hit the jackpot at Vectis (10 per cent buyer’s premium) on May 8-9, when the specialist toy auctioneers dispersed just over 2000 lots of his Dinky and Corgi vehicles at their Buckingham salerooms for a total of £350,000.
Steiff bears keep toy sale totals climbing
02 May 2002AUCTIONEER Andrew Hartley has been holding biannual toy sales for a decade but the last few years has seen them grow in strength. Totals have risen steadily from around £40,000 several years ago to the £66,000 mark achieved at their most recent 650-lot sale which boasted a 95 per cent take-up.
By costly streamlined rarity to a stockbroker’s house
02 May 2002One of only a few thousand produced, a 1935 Dinky Coachcraft, streamlined van, led this specialist toy sale in Sussex at Wallis and Wallis on 18 March.
Museum’s swansong
27 March 2002Museums are well known as the protectors of age, but now we have an example of how age is to prove the downfall of such an institution. The silver lining to this cloud is that it provides a unique opportunity for the trade and collectors.
Dinky Holland Coachcraft streamlined van
25 March 2002This bright red Dinky Holland Coachcraft streamlined van was one of only a few thousand, which in terms of Dinky’s prolific production rate is very few, to be made during their single year of production in 1935.
Fantasy land where the trains ran on time
25 March 2002One of the greatest public works that Sir Edwin Lutyens undertook was the erection of a doll’s house for Queen Mary in 1923. A miniature palace inside Windsor Castle, Mary’s doll’s house was more opulently decorated than the humble abodes of her loyal, grown-up subjects.
Metal-jointed Percy is £17,000 Steiff star
07 March 2002THE Taunton rooms of Greenslade Taylor Hunt (10 per cent buyer’s premium) were graced with the presence of a “minor media celebrity”, on St. Valentine’s day when this rare Steiff rod-jointed teddy bear, right, known as Percy, made an appearance.
Märklin 00 gauge replica
25 February 2002The value of toy trains is rarely tied to world events, but this Märklin 00 gauge replica of a London Midland and Scottish railway locomotive was manufactured by the German toy firm for export to Britain in 1938.
A spin-off from the PoW industry
21 February 2002NOT the priciest offering at Exeter auctioneers Hampton & Littlewood (15% buyer’s premium) on January 30, but undoubtedly the most interesting was this early 19th century automaton right, made from bone.
