This vibrant 2ft 7in x 23in (80 x 60cm) oil still life, titled L’Opaline Verte and painted by Jules Cavaillès (1901-77), is priced at £24,000 from John Adams Fine Art, specialists in 20th century French artists.
Part of Réalité Poétique, a group of painters influenced by the pure colour of Fauvism but with the primary aim of expressing ‘joie de vivre’ in their work, Cavaillès made his name as a painter of vivid scenes evoking the pleasures of life.
He worked in oils, gouache and pastel depicting landscapes, figurative studies and animals, in addition to still lifes.
Cavaillès enrolled at the Academie Julian in 1925 and by 1928 was exhibiting in the Paris Salon. During the Second World War, he was an active member of the Resistance.
