When the now-listed picture house was opened by the Mayor of Sheffield in 1920 it was the largest and most luxurious cinema in the city, referred to as the Picture Palace, like so many of the early UK cinemas.

It was all decorative carving, with a mosaic floor in the foyer, a luxurious cream and gold colour scheme and mahogany seats.

Since July 2015 it has been managed by Hand Of, a Sheffield arts platform which organises cultural events at the venue.
