Letters to the Editor
Hynes’ Private View publicised in book after ATG appeal
05 June 2026A call for help in ATG enabled a dealer and author to track down a missing picture for her soon-to be published book on artist Gladys Hynes (1888-1958).
ATG letter: Emerald owner Ethel was ‘the West Riding’s Consuelo Vanderbilt’
05 June 2026It was with great interest that I read about the Inchiquin Emerald that is currently for sale with Hancocks (News Digest, ATG 2745).
ATG letter: The Reapers appeared at the Royal Academy
05 June 2026Regarding the painting by Alfred William Hallett featured in ATG No 2745, I can confirm it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1939, number 487.
ATG letter: Casino Royale leapt to £29,000 in our sale
15 May 2026Just a small thing, I saw that you wrote in ATG No 2743 that £22,500 for Casino Royale was, you believed, the joint-highest price for a straight, uninscribed copy.
Thank you ATG for a ‘wonderful Kaleidoscope of fascinating art and objects’ in my retirement
08 May 2026I would like to add my tribute to the wonderful ATG following others I have read on the Back Page.
ATG letter: Titanic pocket knife was made by Sheffield maker with taste of luxury
01 May 2026An item of great interest for me was the small pocket knife that was recently sold together with its own story from the Titanic disaster* [see Previews, ATG No 2739].
ATG letter: AI attributions – are we building up problems for the future through questionable ‘facts’?
24 April 2026Railtons [auction house] received this heavy and rather grubby Victorian marble bust just as our end of March catalogue was going to press.
Report on tobacco tamper put me in good temper
10 April 2026I was so glad to see the front page photo in ATG No 2738 [‘Bidders Pipe Up For Treen’].
Triggol alert: time for retirement
10 April 2026Stalwart of the saleroom Stuart Triggol is retiring. He featured in ATG No 2717 to mark his 50 years in the trade.
ATG LETTER: Despite all the Reuters evidence, I still believe Banksy is Robin Banks
02 April 2026Regarding your article in ATG No 2736 and all the recent publicity about the identity of Banksy, Reuters has spent time and money and come up with a name that I do not believe is the right one!
ATG letter: Rostrum doesn’t rise to the occasion
20 March 2026Alex Capon’s article on Christie’s new auction rostrum is most intriguing, though I confess the accompanying photograph fills this reader with a certain melancholy (ATG No 2735).
ATG letter: Octopus vase looks like Japanese banko ware
20 March 2026Re: ‘Mystery octopus vase holds me in suspense’ (ATG No 2735).
ATG letter: Fine netsuke demonstrates why ivory act is ‘ridiculous’
20 March 2026I’m really sorry to hark back to the ridiculous Ivory Act, 2022.
ATG letter: Mystery ‘octopus’ vase holds me in suspense
13 March 2026I’ve been collecting octopus objects for many years and have some interesting and unusual items, though sadly most of my netsukes, although of the finest craftsmanship, are ivory and no longer buyable or tradeable.
ATG letter: Time for an Ivory Act obituary
27 February 2026Martin Levy’s plea for the Ivory Act to be ‘phased out’ (Letters, ATG No 2729) deserves full support from all quarters – dealers, auctioneers and collectors.
ATG letter: Don’t forget this young man in Margate
27 February 2026I was interested to read the article by Joan Porter on Madonna’s visit to Margate – at the invite of Tracey Emin who does so much for the town (Fairs, Markets, Shops & Centres, ATG No 2731).
ATG letter: Canada should think twice before introducing ARR
27 February 2026Artist’s Resale Right [ARR] is illogical, causes unnecessary unemployment and should be abolished immediately.
ATG letter: More auction houses should sort out the after-sale postage
06 February 2026So I’ve found something coming up at auction that I might be interested in, next question: will they post it to me if I win the bidding?
ATG letters: The Ivory Act simply does not work – ‘a waste of money, time and energy’
30 January 2026Further to your excellent report on the Ivory Act (‘Dealers outraged at report claiming benefits of the Ivory Act nearly four years on’, News, ATG No 2728), may I perhaps go further?
ATG letter: How artificial intelligence can deliver real advantages for the art and antiques trade
09 January 2026For more than 40 years I have owned a bundle of 18th and 19th century Scottish family letters.
