£10,000 Goldscheider goes clubbing
01 October 2002The 1440 lots of 20th century decorative arts offered on the first day of the September 3,4 sale at the Bristol Auction Rooms (buyer’s premium 12.77%) included a range of ceramics, plus a dozen items of metalware and furniture, but the lot that really made the decorator trade sit up was this 4ft 1in (1.25m) terracotta creation, right, by Goldscheider.
Rare English porcelain mug
01 October 2002After some research Guy Schwinge of Duke’s in Dorchester discovered this rare English porcelain mug to be an early piece of Worcester and not Bow as originally catalogued.
Sale setback shows French monopolies survive in part
30 September 2002FRENCH auction laws may have been reformed, but monopolies still exist, as Christie’s have just found to their cost.
Only the shell is left...
23 September 2002THIS 75 per cent-complete shell of the extinct South American mammal known as the Glypdodont, pictured right, will be the star attraction of a highly unusual single-owner collection of ornithological and palaeontological specimens being sold by the Moulins auctioneers Enchères Sadde on October 20.
Rich pickings as Dorset's quality vendors include Australians now
23 September 2002THE sales figures from Duke’s sale August 15 & 16 (buyer's premium: 15 per cent) would look good at any time in the year but coming in the high summer for a sale of silver, jewellery and furniture, they were particularly pleasing for auctioneer Matthew Denney.
For when he clocks off...
23 September 2002LATE, but interesting news arrives from Northumberland in the form of this 18th century bracket clock, right, by Horseman and Quare, which emerged from a Northumbrian farmhouse to be the star of the sale held by Jim Railton (15% buyer’s premium) at Newcastle Racecourse on July 13.
Drawing on England's strength, in Sheraton's opinion...
23 September 2002THE word English is arguably superfluous in the title of a selling exhibition entitled The English Drawing Room, which runs from October 1 to 19 at the Mayfair showrooms of Windsor House Antiques.
First moves to open up the Chinese trade
23 September 2002THE chances of China allowing private trading in cultural objects have increased with the third round of debates on amending the law.
Phillips restructure their premiums
23 September 2002PHILLIPS, de Pury & Luxembourg have raised and restructured their buyer’s premiums.
Mickey, Muffin and all Net collectors’ interest
23 September 2002The bane of the shop trade and the boon of auctioneers – the Internet has certainly transformed the marketplace and nowhere is this more true than toy sales.
Big city views of a new lease of life for specialist
23 September 2002AFTER a closure of some 18 months to sort out some little problems with the lease, Mayfair's Shapero Gallery, which specialises in antique prints, photographs, maps and watercolours, reopens this week at 24 Bruton Street, W1 with a show called simply Cities.
Bloomsbury market sale by dropping the premium
23 September 2002LONDON antiquarian books saleroom Bloomsbury Book Auctions are to sell a major library with no buyer’s premium – partially as a marketing exercise. Managing director Rupert Powell believes this is the first time since the premium was introduced in the 1970s that a British auction house has waived the levy.

23 September 2002THE Internet may well be gathering momentum as an effective marketing and selling tool for Herefordshire auctioneers Brightwells who now illustrate about a quarter of the catalogue entries on their website launched in February.
Asian collectors go for French appeal
23 September 2002ASIAN dealers and collectors wishing to escape the grime of city life for more wholesome surrounds could have done worse than take a busman’s holiday to America’s pukka east coast resort of Cape Cod where Eldred’s (15% buyer’s premium), held their annual Asian series in East Dennis, from August 20-24. “In Cape Cod people combine their vacation with the sales,” explained Eldred’s press officer Jo Leal Clark.
Trade interest justifies new policy on gems and silver
23 September 2002THERE was no notable furniture in Mallams 495-lot sale on August 28 (buyer's premium: 15 per cent), but a healthy selling rate for silver and jewellery and some good prices for an assortment of oddities and decorative entries, boosted overall figures.
The leader of the pack
23 September 2002With the government still dithering over whether and when it should put a bill banning hunting with dogs in England to the vote in the House of Commons, it could hardly be a more ironic time for Sotheby's to be auctioning the only known portrait of the 'Father of Foxhunting' and the founder and first Master of the Quorn Hunt.
Essex bidders eye profits to be made under the table…
23 September 2002THERE was only one spectacular price but plenty of exceptional results at this vast Essex dispersal at Sworder's, September 10-11 (Buyer's premium: 15 per cent) – a reminder to the trade that quality goods may be hard to find but wider margins can be made from low-value material.
A Sharp reminder of quality sparks £41,000 bids battle
23 September 2002Quality paintings have been extremely thin on the ground in the provinces in the last few weeks, but this Dorothea Sharp (1874-1955) oil did at least create a stir at the Leominster rooms of Brightwells (15% buyer’s premium) on August 29 when it climbed to £41,000 against an estimate of £3000-5000.
Wellington’s other heroic duke who gave his life in battle…
