Bonhams

Bonhams is an auction house with headquarters in the UK. It operates two London salerooms as well as others in Edinburgh, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. 

In 2000, Bonhams was merged with Brooks, a specialist Classic Car auctioneer, and Phillips Son & Neale not long after. US auctioneers Butterfields joined the group in 2002.

In September 2018, chairman Robert Brooks stepped down after selling the company to private equity group Epiris. In 2022, the firm went on a buying spree purchasing US auction house Skinner, Swedish saleroom Bukowskis, Danish saleroom Bruun Rasmussen and then French outfit Cornette de Saint Cyr.

Lectern took musical inspiration

The November 4 Japanese sale at Bonhams includes, estimated at £7000-8000, this Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-26) era lacquer kendai (lectern) fashioned in the form of traditional court music and dance implements.

Body of work – large-scale anatomical atlas

Printed in Amsterdam in 1685, Anatomia humani corporis, centum & quinque tabulis, per artificiossis by Godard Bidloo (1649-1713) was the first large-scale anatomical atlas since Vesalius’ De humani corporis fabrica in 1543.

Napoleon tries his English skills

According to the memoir Le Mémorial de Sainte- Hélène by Count Emmanuel de Las Cases published in 1823, Napoleon first expressed an interest to learn the English language during the two-month voyage from Europe to the island in 1815 aboard the Northumberland.
