Standing 20in (49cm), the high-quality Grand Tour copy of the famous Roman original discovered in 1777 was among many items in the sale from the collection of the late Peter James Rankin.

He was given the vase in 1975 but previously it had been acquired c.1950 at a contents sale at Downhill, Co Londonderry, built by Frederick Augustus Hervey, Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry, in the late 18th century.

Neal's Views of English Country Seats describes the west drawing room at Downhill as containing "several vases, a beautiful China vase and a model of the Warwick vase".

The successful bidder in Salisbury on January 7, who paid well above the estimate of £1500-2000, was described as a collector from the Far East.

The buyer's premium was 22%.

A full report on the first major sale of 2016 will appear in next week's issue of ATG's print publication.
