According to a federal complaint filed in New York, Spoutz sold dozens of works to galleries and institutions such as the Smithsonian Institutions' National Museums of American Art and American History, Dartmouth College and the Florida State Capital.

According to the complaint, Spoutz claimed that the works he sold were by artists such as Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, though specific paintings have not yet been named.

Though Spoutz, who sometimes used alternate names,  is charged with having forged authentication documents for the works, the identity of the art forger has yet to be released.
