The oil and Magna on canvas from 1964 measured 4ft (1.22m) square and had an unpublished estimate of around $80m.

It had previously sold at Sotheby's in 1995 for a premium-inclusive $1.65m - the jump in price reflecting the phenomenal growth in the artist's prices, and the Contemporary art market in general, over the last two decades.

Selling to an anonymous phone buyer at Christie's, the sum surpassed the previous auction high for Lichtenstein which was set back in May 2013 when Woman with Flowered Hat from 1963 sold in the same room for $50m (£33.8m).

The buyer's premium was 25/20/12%
