Standing 23in (59cm) high, it is signed and dated 1928. As far as the auctioneers are aware, no vase with these silver plated mounts has been offered at auction before.

The mounts have impressive floral decoration and would have been made around 1920 in Hanley by the Duchess of Sutherland Silversmiths, also known as the Cripples Guild, under the guidance of Francis Arthur Edwards.

The vase is decorated in a flambé Eventide design with trees all the way around the vase, and the rim has a high-fired luster effect.

A photograph of a similar vase at the 1926 White City exhibition in London appears in the 1987 Moorcroft book by Paul Atterbury. The vase at Potteries Auctions was in a Canadian collection for over 60 years before it changed hands privately and has been in a UK collection now for several years.

The estimate is £10,000-20,000.

The vase will be one of the highlights at the sale which also includes a rare and early Moorish Minstrel figure manufactured by Royal Doulton which has a £1000-£2000 estimate.

Moving Location

The sale itself will take place after Potteries Auctions complete their move away from their Cobridge saleroom in Stoke-on-Trent where they have been holding auctions specialising in Royal Doulton and Beswick pottery since 1991. The old premises will still house the Potteries Antiques Centre, but the new auction site in Silverdale, located in the suburbs west of Stoke-on-Trent, is three times larger.

With two floors, they will have a permanent showroom upstairs and a larger saleroom downstairs with big enterprise park-style roller doors making it easier to move in large items. There will also be extra car parking and the M6 is closer to their new location.

The first auction there is scheduled for March 28 and they are planning to hold regular Saturday sales each month as well as quarterly fine art catalogued sales and specialist sales.
