The ten-lot group from Yorkshire's legendary stately home is valued at over £10m and spans a range of periods and media, from Roman antiquities to Old Master paintings and 17th century Italian furniture.
The collections "chart two millennia of history and 300 years of collecting" said Henry Wyndham, Chairman of Sotheby's Europe, "starting with the visionary 3rd Earl of Carlisle, and continuing through his Romanophile son, Henry, collector of antiquities and Venetian vedute, to his diplomat grandson Frederick, 5th Earl of Carlisle".
They are to be offered on behalf of the trustees of Castle Howard, in the hope they will make "an important contribution to the long term future of the Castle Howard estate and collections."
This view of the Grand Canal in Venice by Bernardo Bellotto (1722-80), painted when a 16 year-old Bellotto was working in the studio of his uncle Canaletto, is estimated at £2.5m-3.5m.
Other star lots include a pair of Italian pietre dure inlaid cabinets produced in Rome in the 17th century and purchased in 1739 valued at £700,000-£1m and a monumental quartz diorite vase from Roman Egypt, c.1st century BC, is estimated at £400,000-600,000.
As with the Dukes of Northumberland collections had done last summer, the Howard consignment will provide the focus of Sotheby's Old Masters and Treasures sales held in London on July 8.
