Specialist - Travel, Maps & Atlases

BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS DEPARTMENT, CENTRAL LONDON

Sotheby's is one of the most prominent and influential forces in the auction world, combining proud tradition with state-of-the-art expertise. Our origins date back more than 270 years when Samuel Baker, the founder, held the first-ever sale of rare and valuable books. Books and manuscripts remain prime areas of expertise and we are the leading sellers in this diverse field.

In this role you will be fully involved in generating new business while also cataloguing, researching and helping to co-ordinate Travel, Maps, Atlases and Natural History sales within the Books and Manuscripts department. Reporting to the Department Director, you will work closely with senior colleagues in promoting sales, undertake lectures and other promotional activities to raise the profile of the department and work on the preparation of major valuations. You will also be involved in all aspects of the production of sale catalogues as well as assisting in the general day-to-day running of the department.

Educated preferably to degree level, you will have specialist knowledge of cartography, travel and plate books, and natural history books. It would also be an advantage if you were familiar with nineteenth-century photography and the antiquarian book trade, the commercial art world or auction houses in general. Organised, flexible and able to work well under pressure, you will be equally comfortable operating alone or as part of a team and be prepared to work extended hours at deadlines and to travel in the UK and abroad, at short notice. You should be able to communicate at all levels within the business and with a wide-range of potential clients while additional European language skills would be advantageous.

In return you can look forward to a competitive salary and benefits that include private health cover, pension, life assurance and permanent health insurance.

To apply, please upload your CV and a covering letter through the Sotheby's careers portal at the following address:
