Remarkable for both their size and their original condition, this pair of Italian console tables c,1760 sold for £28,000 Semley Auctioneers of Shaftesbury in Dorset on January 24.
The property of a deceased estate, the tables boasted original silver and gilt decoration and handsome shaped castracane marble tops. But what this photograph does not necessarily convey is their impressive scale – each measures 4ft 8in (1.41cm) wide.
Making towards the top end of a £20,000-30,000 estimate, the buyer was Arundel, Sussex dealer Spencer Swaffer.
He told ATG he was delighted to have them and expects to find a buyer among his many American clients.
The buyer’s premium was 17.5 per cent.
