Among the dealers who have left the building during the past year are Malcolm Fairley, Martyn Gregory, Grovesnor Gallery, John Carlton-Smith and Charles Frodsham.

The Grade II listed building to be renovated is located at the corner of Bury Street and Ryder Street.

For some dealers the works mean a temporary relocation.

Malcolm Fairley will return to his Bury Street space in September following the completion of works. The Japanese art dealer’s temporary premises will be in 32 St James’s Street around the corner from his permanent location.

For Martyn Gregory the move is shorter still; in December they moved from 34 to 35 Bury Street, and plan to return to their usual location before this autumn.

Others such as Arnold Wiggins & Sons picture framers will remain in their shop for the duration of the work though they predict that it will be disruptive.

However, Grovesnor Gallery, who moved to a new St James’s gallery in November, will not return to Bury Street. Though they plan to move again in November they say that returning to their previous location “was not an option.” They plan to take up their next residence in a new St James’ location.

John Carlton-Smith who has held a gallery at the building for 35 years is also planning permanent relocation. Their new space at Hughenden House in Kent is open by appointment this autumn.

Works on the Bury Street building will include general renovation and also address a damp problem. Plans will also include the creation of residential properties above the galleries.

Crown Estates informed dealers that the works will take between 18 months and two years to complete.
