It sold for $90,000 (£63,380) plus premium after what the auctioneers described as "spirited transatlantic bidding".

The 150oz tureen, which stands on lion mask-headed paw feet and is hallmarked for 1740, had been consigned by a New Jersey collector who was also selling a pair of 32oz de Lamerie sauceboats of 1742 which realised $20,000 (£14,085) at the auction on January 27.
