Dutch-born Mr van Maris, 53, pictured here, joins TEFAF following a long career at Sotheby's. He was managing director of Sotheby's Amsterdam from 2003-06, before moving to London where he was managing director of Sotheby's Europe from 2008-12.

Most recently he focused on global projects for Sotheby's and it was in this capacity that he worked with TEFAF in 2013 to explore the possibility of establishing an art fair in Beijing, a project that was later deemed "not viable at the current time".

Mr Hustinx told the chairman of the TEFAF executive committee, Willem van Roijen, that he wished to step down last summer.

"I felt that after 26 years, TEFAF needed a fresh pair of eyes and insight to take it forward," he said. Changes will come into effect in May and Mr Hustinx will officially retire from September 1 but will remain an advisor to the fair.
